Early data shows that the polar vortex is likely to be weaker than normal in the winter of 2024/2025.
The forecast is from the 00z 20 november 2024 gfs ensemble. Following a polar vortex disruption in early march, winds at 60 degrees north (outlined in magenta) on march 16, 2024, were mostly from the east—a reversal of the normal wintertime circulation of the polar stratosphere.
